Three Terms, Three Different Things

Flexibility, mobility, and stretching are often used as though they mean the same thing. They don't — and conflating them can lead to training that addresses the wrong problem.

Flexibility refers to a muscle's capacity to be lengthened. It's a passive quality: how far can a muscle stretch when an outside force — gravity, a strap, another person — assists it? A gymnast performing a split may demonstrate extreme flexibility, but flexibility alone doesn't tell you whether that person can control movement through that range.

Mobility is about the joint, not just the tissue around it. It describes how well you can actively move a joint through its range of motion using your own muscular effort. Mobility depends on flexibility, but it also requires strength, coordination, and neuromuscular control. Someone might be flexible enough for a deep squat but lack the hip and ankle mobility to perform one properly under load.

Stretching is a practice — a tool used to influence flexibility and, to some extent, mobility. It is not a synonym for either term.

Flexibility

The ability of a muscle or muscle group to lengthen passively through a range of motion. Flexibility is a property of soft tissue — it says nothing about whether you can actively control that range.

Mobility

The ability of a joint to move actively through its full range of motion with control. Mobility combines flexibility with strength and neuromuscular coordination.

Static Stretching

Holding a muscle in a lengthened position for a sustained period, typically 20–60 seconds. Best used after activity or as a standalone session rather than immediately before vigorous exercise.

Dynamic Stretching

Controlled, movement-based stretches that take joints through their range of motion without holding a fixed position. Commonly used in warm-ups to prepare muscles and joints for activity.

Range of Motion (ROM)

The full arc through which a joint can move. ROM can be passive (achieved with external assistance) or active (achieved by your own muscular effort).

Neuromuscular Control

The nervous system's ability to coordinate muscle activation around a joint. Strong neuromuscular control allows you to stabilize and move through a range of motion safely.

A common example: tight hamstrings. Many people assume the fix is simply stretching the hamstrings repeatedly. Similarly, someone who is very flexible (say, hypermobile individuals or those with connective tissue laxity) may actually need less passive stretching and more stability and strength work to move safely and effectively.

Using Stretching Effectively

These prepare muscles and joints for exertion and are generally recommended as part of a warm-up routine. They do not significantly reduce muscle force output the way prolonged static stretching can when done immediately before vigorous exercise.

Static Stretching (After Activity or as Standalone Work)

Static stretches involve holding a lengthened position for a sustained period. They are most effective for improving passive flexibility when performed after exercise or during dedicated flexibility sessions. Research suggests holding each stretch for at least 20–30 seconds and repeating it two to four times for meaningful effect over time.

Building Mobility, Not Just Flexibility

To genuinely improve mobility, pair stretching with strengthening exercises that work muscles through their full range of motion — such as deep squats with controlled tempo, or shoulder CARs (controlled articular rotations). This trains the nervous system to trust and actively use the range your tissue is capable of.
