Why Gardening Myths Spread So Easily
Gardening advice travels fast — through neighborhood fences, social media posts, and decades-old books that get passed down without question. Some of that advice is genuinely useful. But a surprising amount of it is rooted in intuition that sounds logical but doesn't hold up when tested in practice or studied more rigorously.
The myths below aren't fringe beliefs. They're things that well-meaning gardeners repeat every season — and in several cases, they actively work against a healthy garden. Understanding why they're wrong is just as useful as knowing the correction.

Putting a layer of gravel at the bottom of a container improves drainage and prevents roots from sitting in water.
Fact
Gravel layers can actually create a perched water table that keeps the soil above it wetter, not drier. Drainage improves only when water can exit freely — through a drainage hole, not by hitting gravel.
This myth comes from intuition: gravel seems like it should let water pass. But soil science describes a concept called a perched water table — water resists moving from fine-textured material (potting soil) into coarser material (gravel) until the upper layer is fully saturated. The result is that the soil stays wetter for longer, which is the opposite of the goal.
The fix is simple: use containers with functional drainage holes, and choose a well-structured potting mix appropriate for the plant type. No gravel layer needed.
Myth
Adding coffee grounds to soil or compost acidifies it, which is great for acid-loving plants like blueberries and azaleas.
Fact
Brewed coffee grounds are closer to pH-neutral than acidic. While fresh, unbrewed grounds are somewhat acidic, the brewing process extracts most of that acidity. Used grounds have relatively little effect on soil pH.
The association between coffee and acidity is understandable — coffee itself is acidic. But the grounds that remain after brewing have had most of their soluble acidic compounds removed. Research from multiple university extension programs has found brewed coffee grounds to have a pH ranging from about 6.5 to nearly neutral, depending on the source and brewing method.
That doesn't mean coffee grounds are useless. They add organic matter and some nitrogen, and can improve soil structure in compost. But if your goal is to lower soil pH for blueberries or azaleas, a targeted soil amendment based on an actual soil test is a more reliable approach.
Myth
Watering plants during the middle of the day causes leaf scorch because water droplets act like magnifying lenses and burn the foliage.
Fact
Scientific studies have found no evidence that midday watering causes leaf scorch in this way. The physics don't support it — water on leaves doesn't focus sunlight enough to cause burning under normal conditions.
This is one of gardening's most durable myths, and it has been tested. Researchers have found that water droplets on leaves do not act as effective lenses under typical sunlight conditions. The refractive index and geometry of small water droplets prevent meaningful light concentration on leaf surfaces.
Morning watering is still generally preferred — it gives foliage time to dry, which reduces the risk of fungal disease. But if midday is the only practical time you can water, it won't burn your plants. Consistent moisture is more important than perfect timing.

To improve heavy clay soil, mix in sand to loosen it up and improve drainage.
Fact
Adding sand to clay soil without adding significant organic matter can actually make the situation worse, creating a concrete-like texture. Compost and other organic amendments are the right approach.
The clay-plus-sand problem is well-documented in soil science. Clay particles are extremely fine, and when combined with sand without adequate organic material, the result can be a dense, hard mixture that drains poorly and is difficult for roots to penetrate — similar in texture to fired clay or cement.
Improving clay soil takes time and the right inputs. Incorporating generous amounts of compost each season gradually changes the structure, improving both drainage and aeration. Myth
You should always remove dead leaves and plant debris from the garden to prevent disease and pests.
Fact
Leaving some organic debris in place supports beneficial insects, improves soil biology as material decomposes, and can protect plant crowns during winter. Blanket removal is often counterproductive.
A tidy garden feels productive, but obsessive cleanup can remove habitat for ground beetles, parasitic wasps, and other beneficial insects that overwinter in leaf litter and hollow stems. Many of these insects are natural predators of common garden pests.
That doesn't mean leaving diseased plant material in place — infected debris should be removed and disposed of away from the garden, not composted. But healthy fallen leaves and spent stems can be left to break down, mulched in place, or moved to a compost pile. The goal is thoughtful management, not maximum tidiness.
